Our Sewalong is Sew Powerful!
This time we are partnering with the Sew Powerful organization to make purses for kids in Africa. Read on to find out how these purses help young women spend an extra 6 weeks a year in school!
The Sew Powerful Organization
Sew Powerful works to combat extreme poverty by creating jobs that provide training and tools to facilitate the creation of purposeful products. These include purses, school uniforms, reusable hygiene pads, soap, and farm fresh food. All designed to promote and enable the academic success of children throughout Zambia and elsewhere, while providing the dignity of work for adults.
Their research proves that it is very common for girls to stay home when they are on their period - simply because they don't have the resources to manage it. It has been documented that girls miss an average of 6 weeks of school a year for this reason. The purses we all make as part pf this Sewalong will be filled with resuable pads and soap, and distributed to the girls who need them.

Sewalong Dates and Prizes
The sewalong opens on November 25th 2024 and runs until January 31st 2025. Everyone can access the patterns and make purses, but only event attendees are eligible to win prizes!
The prize categories are:
- Most Purses Made
- Most Majestic Modeling of a Purse
- Most Delightful Purse - as chosen by Bea Byrne, host of Quilt n Learn.

To enter the competition you need to...
- Be registered as an attendee of Quilt n Learn's January 2025 event. (Free and VIP attendees are both eligible to enter.)
- Have made and finished a Sew Powerful Purse by January 31st 2025.
- Have completed the short entry form, including a photo of your purse(s), by 11:59pm PST on January 31st 2025.
- Agree to the terms and conditions below.
You can make and enter more than one purse! In fact, we have a prize for the person who finishes the most. You can enter each category once per purse you make.
Terms & Conditions
- This competition is being hosted by Lixie Makes It LLC, owned by Bea Byrne.
- The competition runs from November 25th 2024 until January 31st 2024 at 11:59PM PST.
- Entry is by completing and submitting the entry form. No other method of entry is possible.
- Multiple entries are possible - one entry per completed Wallet is allowed.
- The photo submitted may be used by Lixie Makes It LLC or by Radha from Sewing Through Fog either individually or in compilations, and may be used to promote the sewalong, the pattern or the activities of either business in general. The maker's name will be included in attribution.
- Winners will be chosen by Bea for each category, and the winners will be announced the week of February 3rd 2025. Winners will be notified via email using the address they entered when they filled out the entry form.
- The winner needs to respond within 30 days of the notification being sent.
- Prizes are as stated and can not be substituted.
