"I have been making my quilts by hand for 15 or so years. Based in San Francisco, I am one of the few Traditional hand piecers and hand quilters in a sea of Art and Contemporary quilters located in the Bay Area. I finally found some like minded quilters amongst the Dorcas Hand Quilters, a group that meets once a week to hand quilt. I bless these ladies everyday for teaching me these time honored skills and I now travel around the quilting community lecturing and teaching so quilters can rediscover the Joys of Handwork. My lectures specialize in the fascinating quilt history from the 1930's starting with the Sears Century of Progress contest mystery and the controversy over the winning entry.
I have expanded my handwork into the ancient and beautiful art of Sashiko stitching from Japan. Sashiko pops up in the many handwork classes I teach both in person and on line. I love to include this skill in my beginning Sashiko classes. Next step classes specialize in projects using Moyozashi (pattern Sashiko) and Hitomezashi (one stitch Sashiko) patterns. My class Visible Mending the Boro Way branches out into the craft of visible mending and shows you how to mend garments to create a work of art.
Contact me at [email protected] and take a look at my website pattiehandquilts.net for more information on my lectures and workshops. You can also see what I’m working on now by subscribing to my weekly newsletter The Joy of Handwork at pattiehandquilts.substack.com."
My Workshop
Learn to do the traditional and beautiful Japanese art of Sashiko. This is a functional embroidery that started as a practical mending stitch for textiles and has become an art into itself. Learn the running stitch technique Japanese stitchers use and how to stitch using the authentic patterns, threads and supplies used by Japanese stitchers.
Pattie will demonstrate Moyozashi or pattern Sashiko starting with drawing a grid on your fabric. Then we will stitch a Hitomezashi (one stitch) pattern called Jujizashi (Ten Cross Stitch) on the grid. We will also cover more complicated stitches that can be added to this basic grid.
Pattie will show you how to prepare and use this Sashiko sample to patch a pair of jeans or you could use it to add a decoration to a garment using the buttonhole stitch.
The skills you learn in this class with give you a firm foundation and get you started on your own journey into the world of Sashiko.
