I grew up in a community of textiles within my grandmother’s church group who made quilts and blankets for wounded veterans. This is where I learned to crochet, knit, and eventually sew around 8 or 9 years old. Seeing how simple textile materials like yarn and fabric could be used to craft an emotionally positive impact in others’ lives made me fall in love with the medium. Inspired by the quilters in her group, I began watching YouTube videos about quilting from people like Jenny Doan from MO Star Quilt Company, and tried to emulate her simple block patterns using rags and other scrap fabrics around the house. This style of learning online, the comfort it brought me, and the ritualistic practice of doing so all have greatly become the foundation for my quilt practice today. At Washington University in St. Louis, where I am currently going into my 3rd year as an undergraduate, I am learning computer science in order to make the next generation of more quilts interactive, more engaging, and more connected to the stories they tell. From digital interaction, to AI, computerized patchwork techniques, embroidery and more, I am trying to develop new techniques that fuse computer science and traditional quilting to tell human stories in stronger more impactful ways. All of these efforts are in the spirit of encouraging difficult dialogues on topics like racism, sexism, homophobia, interfaith, growing up and other topics that require empathy for others.
My Workshop
"Modern T Shirt Quilts: From Design to Finished Quilt" invites you to embark on a your journey of creating a modern t-shirt quilt, weaving together personal narratives and cherished memories with modern design elements. Building upon the foundational design concepts introduced in last year’s session, this course meticulously guides you from the initial creative vision to the final stitches and binding. Throughout the course, you will learn how to select and prepare your t-shirts, how to utilize color and form to tell a compelling narrative and other best practices. We will explore a variety of techniques for crafting a cohesive quilt top and pattern utilizing methods such as freezer paper templates, traditional paper stencils, and advanced computerized cutting techniques with machines like the Cricut. This diverse approach empowers you to create a unique layout that truly reflects your personal aesthetic and technical capabilities.
In addition, we will delve into essential strategies for working with stretchy t-shirt fabric, including expert tips on sewing complex and curved seams with precision and ease. Whether you are an experienced quilter or a newcomer eager to repurpose your t-shirts, this course equips you with the skills and confidence to transform t-shirts—each holding a unique narrative—into a stunning quilt that resonates with meaning. Join me in this creative exploration to discover how the right layout and piecing can elevate your t-shirt quilt into a powerful expression of your identity and memory.
