Sewing has been my passion since I was 9 years old and made clothes for my Barbie doll! More than 35 years ago I started quilting as therapy to ease homesickness after a move to Namibia from where I grew up on the East Coast of South Africa. I never looked back after that – sewers & quilters truly are super friendly and supportive around our common passion.
After obtaining a degree and Post Graduate Teaching Diploma, I taught languages for a number of years. I then realized that I would prefer combining teaching with my love of sewing. It has been all about teaching sewing and quilting since then.
My favourites are applique and quilting; machine embroidery and garment sewing including sewing bras & panties. It makes me very happy to be able to share my sewing skills and see people get excited about learning new skills and being creative with their projects.
It was my privilege to be the Conference Coordinator for the National Quilt Show: Quilt Canada in 2017 and 2018. I have “retired” from a long career in the sewing industry but I continue to share my sewing and quilting skills through my sewing business: www.sewwithliz.com. Creativity and learning are such fun!
I live in beautiful British Columbia in the Vancouver area and I look forward to meeting you and having creative fun with you in my Granny Squares workshop.
My Workshop
Do you have an abundance of quilting fabric scraps? Mmmm.... of course you do! I have a unique and clever way to bust your scrap stash while you make quick and simple quilt-as-you-go blocks. We will make 4 patch blocks, add a piece of batting and in no time at all you will have a Granny square with no raw edges - NO binding needed. Have fun trying out different quilting techniques on your Granny square: free motion? ruler quilting? walking foot quilting? Stitch in the ditch? One Granny square could be a coaster, mug rug or pot holder. But these Granny squares come together so quickly that you will for sure want to make make more. It can become a little addictive as you master the easy steps and see your scrap pile diminsihing! Then join them together quickly and easily to make placemats, table runners, lap quilts, baby quilts and more. Scrappy or colour co-ordinated? That's up to you. Join me for some Granny square fun in this relaxed and creative workshop.
