I am a quilt maker, presenter, instructor and author living and working in Northern Californiaâs San Francisco Bay Area.
I specialize in making quilts from rescued textiles, particularly silks. Neckties, saris, kimonos and furnishing fabrics all find their way into my quilts.
Born and raised in England, I worked as a menswear textile designer in Yorkshire and Scotland, and later for a company on Savile Row, in the heart of Londonâs bespoke tailoring industry.
I moved to New York City in the early 1990âs, and America has been my home ever since.
I enjoy lecturing and teaching on the subject of quilting-making with unusual and reclaimed textiles. My first book, âPatchwork Luxe: Quilts from Neckties, Kimonos and Sari Silksâ was published in 2024.
My Workshop
If you like the look of crazy pieced blocks but donât care to hand appliquĂ©, join me on an adventure in machine-sewn crazy piecing.
Crazy piecing was at its most popular in the late 1800s. Blocks were made from scraps of silks, hand-appliquéd onto a muslin foundation in a design reminiscent of crazed pottery glaze.
My method does not use tiny patches, but starts with larger swatches and follows a sequence of seaming, cutting and seaming again. Youâll see how you can create improvised, abstract, crazy-pieced panels for use in quilts, clothing or crafts.
For those interested in picking up a needle and thread, Iâll show you the decorative feather stitch traditionally used to embellish crazy piecing.
My technique works for any type of fabric, but Iâll demonstrate this method using gorgeous, up cycled silk textiles from neckties, kimonos and more. Your fabric choices will determine whether your crazy piecing looks modern, traditional or ready for use in an art quilt.
