I'm fortunate to come from a rich tradition of quilters, sewists, and artists. Quilts, in particular, have always been a source of comfort and joy passed down from generation to generation in my family. Even as a child, I enjoyed quiltmaking (dolly-sized at that point), sewing, crocheting, drawing, and other creative outlets - always keeping my hands busy with something new.
When, as a young adult, health challenges made hand appliquĂ© and hand quilting no longer physically viable for me, my first instinct was dismay and discouragement. But Grandma Baldwin gave me loving (but stern!) advice: âNo pity parties - just figure out a different way.â And a career was born!
Now I'm an author, designer, teacher, and Brand Ambassador. It brings me great joy to share my accessible machine piecing, âinvisibleâ machine appliquĂ©, fun fiber arts techniques, creative machine quilting, and great-looking machine binding methods with other quilters and fiber artists around the world - all from my home in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
My Workshop
First Steps in Thread Painting - See how fun and easy it can be to beautifully finish the edges of raw-edged machine appliqué, add subtle dimension and shading to commercially printed motifs, bring an original sketch to life, or add fun details to pictorial or landscape quilts - all on your home sewing machine. We'll also explore how to set yourself up for success with your choice of stitch settings, presser feet, sewing machine needles, specific types of threads, and a variety of stabilizers. Threadpainting techniques can be used for accents or embellishment in quilting, sewing, home dec, craft, or clothing projects; as well as to create frameable pieces of fiber art.
To get started, you'll need a free-motion, spring-embroidery, or darning foot and the ability to lower the feed dogs on your machine. Previous free-motion quilting experience will be helpful; but is not necessary. It's a lot easier than you may think!Â
