Bea Byrne is an artist and entrepreneur living in Oakland, California. Originally from the UK, she lived and worked in London for more than 20 years before moving to Tokyo, Japan, and then to San Francisco in 2015. She has taught and studied quilts and other crafts in all three countries, adopting the virtual event format from as early as 2013. She became President of the SF Quilters Guild in 2016, serving for two years, and continues to volunteer with them and the East Bay Heritage Quilters.
After time at Art College in the UK, Bea’s career took her into physics (in which she majored), not-for-profits, big-tech, and marketing, while she continued to create and teach classes in sewing, embroidery, knitting and crochet. In 2023 she started working full-time for herself, focussing on quilting and craft education and events. In 2024 she launched the virtual QUILT2024 events, with more than 15k attendees watching workshops from teachers worldwide. Having rebranded as “Quilt n Learn” she has now confirmed more event dates for 2025. As well as quilting, Bea maintains a strong interest in entrepreneurship and business development and advises others on growing their businesses. Bea is also a cancer survivor and an enthusiastic cat lady.
My Workshop
In this workshop we will dive into the world of english paper piecing past, present and future. Using historical examples, my own work and examples from international artists, I will show you what can be achieved with EPP and what is possible once you have mastered the basics. We'll start with the earliest known example of english paper piecing and look at how things like "fussy cutting" aren't quite as new as you might think. We'll look at the tools that are essential plus those that are nice to have and how you can use EPP for projects large and small! You will leave with a new awareness of what is possible plus the knowledge of where to go to start your next project - not to mention oodles of inspiration.
